"American Fiction" (2023) starring Jeffrey Wright, Erika Alexander and Sterling K. Brown is an absolute masterpiece!!!
Wright stars as "Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison", a novelist that has grown tired of the extremely poor representation of black Americans in film and literature and how the establishment profits from this type of content. Through the pen, he decides to fight back in a joking manner and it backfires in a truly hilarious way.
Wright heads a cast of heavyweights with Sterling K. Brown as his brother "Cliff" and Erika Alexander as his love interest "Coraline". The script is quite clever and requires a steady ear to catch all that's going on in this project.
The film also tackles the many woes of American family life from handling the affairs of aging parents to maneuvering strained relationships between siblings.
The many facets of storytelling that exist in the arts and entertainment industry is depicted very carefully and strategically here. How reality is shaped through fiction and how the black community is forced to live in this fabricated world makes for great theater.
