Black Cake (2023) starring Mia Isaac and Chipo Chung is a gem of a TV show that is masterfully written.

Based on the book 'Black Cake: The Novel (2022) by Charmaine Wilkerson, this series delves deep into the life of a Caribbean woman's family history, secrets, trauma and fears that get passed from one generation to the next.

The urgent reaction to the book suggests the high level of quality here! It was just released last year, Oprah's production company picked it up right away and turned it into a series for 2023.

This show stands out particularly due to the writing and casting. Mia Isaac is the young version of the lead protagonist, Eleanor and Chipo Chung is the older version. The likeness between these two actresses is uncanny and the way that the character was written is well executed.

The show is beautifully shot, shining the spotlight on beautiful Caribbean landscapes. The framing of many of the shots on the show help to move the story along while aiding in the development of each character.

I don't want to give too much away, but there is a lot to unpack here! It is a great discussion piece. There are only 8 episodes. Episode 6 airs this Wednesday on Hulu.
